Student Showing Signs of Distress

Low Level of Distress
  • Short periods of crying
  • Difficulty concentrating in class
  • Reduced participation compared to usual
  • Signs of irritation (e.g. raised voice, rapid breathing)
  • Signs of agitation (e.g. fidgeting)
  • Pallor or flushed face
  • Appears worried, embarrassed or lethargic
Medium Level of Distress
  • Continuous or frequent crying
  • Disruptive behaviour (e.g. interrupting, swearing)
  • Significant agitation (e.g. unable to sit still, shaking)
  • Difficulty following what is happening in class
  • Falling asleep in class
  • Visible signs of intoxication
High Level of Distress
  • Intense or prolonged crying
  • Verbal threats of harm to self or others
  • Physically threatening behaviour
  • Extreme agitation or inability to calm down
  • Appears confused, disorientated or out of touch with reality
Minor Incident

Causes concern but no immediate risk to safety or wellbeing

Concerning Incident

Has an impact on the student, other students or the staff but no immediate risk to safety

Critical Incident

Immediate or imminent risk of harm to the student, other students or staff

Support Actions
  • Talk to the student (if they are willing)
  • Allow the student to leave the class briefly
  • Provide information on where to find support
Support + Follow Up
  • Remain calm
  • Talk to the student (if they are willing)
  • Encourage the student to access support services
  • Send a follow-up email to the student
  • Notify the Disability Service
Emergency Response
  • Remain calm
  • Ensure immediate safety (yourself and others)
